This quote was the "thought for the day" in our local newspaper the other day. "Real stories, in distinction from those we invent, have no author. Although history owes its existence to men, it is not 'made' by them." This quote is attributed to Hannah Arendt, a German philosopher and historian.

Any thoughts?

I would beg to differ on what this quote might mean. "Real stories" do have an author or authors. The authors are the individuals and groups of individuals who "act out" the stories even though their names may never be known. History does owe its existence to men and, I would think, is the very actions of men. Thus, history is the past actions of individuals and groups and was indeed written by their actions. It is up to historians to make sure the actions are recorded accurately.

The author of a 'real story" is the historian that writes it as it happened without judging whether the participants did anything correctly or incoorectly. It is the same theory as "every action has an equal and opposite reaction" but we cannot judge (or even predict) the reaction to the actions of men because all men have their own minds. The participants in history as it is made are only reacting to the previous actions of other participants. I did not use "actors" because actors work from a script. History is an overview of time past. Time has no script until it is history.
